The neighborhood.
Ridgewood is a borough-straddling paradox: officially Queens (ZIP 11385), but culturally half-Bushwick. Its roots are German and Italian blue-collar — breweries, beer halls, and the yellow-brick Mathews Model Flats built 1908-1912 — layered with Polish, Eastern European, and South American immigrant waves. The result is a genuinely mixed streetscape: old-school bakeries and beer halls next to third-wave coffee and vintage shops.
The defining split is the L-train side versus the deeper Queens side. Near the Bushwick border — around Myrtle-Wyckoff and Halsey — it's younger, creative, and nightlife-heavy, with warehouse venues and the famous outdoor dance club Nowadays. Head east toward Fresh Pond Road and Forest Avenue and Ridgewood reverts to its working-class self: quieter tree-lined blocks of well-kept two- and three-family houses. Walk both halves before deciding — the cool stuff clusters hard on the western edge.
Housing stock & prices.
The stock is overwhelmingly small multi-family: 4,523 two-to-four-family units versus just 448 single-family homes, 401 condos, and only 13 co-ops — co-ops barely exist here. The architectural signature is the Mathews Model Flat: three-story Romanesque Revival tenements clad in yellow Kreischer brick, protected across 10 national historic districts and 4 NYC landmark districts, the most landmarked districts of any Queens neighborhood.
Prices by type, all 2026-vintage: per PropertyShark's Q2 2026 data, houses ran a $1M median (-1.2% YoY, 16 transactions) and condos $710K (6 transactions), against a $925K blended median (-13.6% YoY). Homes.com's trailing-12-month view shows a $900K blended median with single-family at $1.1M and 1BRs at $549K; Redfin's rolling 3 months to August 2026 read $1,081,978 blended. Nearly all the action is in 2-4 family buildings, with multi-family listings running $879K-$3.8M.

Getting around.
Two subway options, one much better than the other. The L train stops at Halsey St and Myrtle-Wyckoff on the border edge — one of the system's more reliable lines, with realistic door-to-door to Midtown of 30-40 minutes from the border zone. The M train (local) serves the deeper Queens side at Fresh Pond Rd, Forest Ave, and Seneca Ave — usable but meaningfully slower, adding 10-20 minutes to a Manhattan trip. From deep Ridgewood, Midtown is genuinely the weak point: most working residents face 45-60 minute commutes.
Walkability.
Ridgewood is a Walk Score 95 ("Walker's Paradise"), Transit Score 92 ("Rider's Paradise"), and Bike Score 73 per walkscore.com — the 35th most walkable neighborhood in NYC, with some 319 restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. It does not feel car-dependent at all near the commercial corridors of Myrtle, Forest, and Fresh Pond, though deeper residential blocks are quieter and more car-typical.
Schools.
Ridgewood sits in NYC Geographic District 24. The elementary tier is solid: PS 81 Jean Paul Richter, ACE Academy for Scholars, PS 376 School of Technology, and PS 151 Lyndon B. Johnson all rate 8/10 on GreatSchools, with PS 68 Cambridge at 7/10. The middle-school picture is weaker — IS 93 Ridgewood rates 3/10 on GreatSchools, and the NYC DOE's 2024-25 quality report scores it 2.53 ("Fair") on instruction. Parents search PS 81 and IS 93 by name: strong K-5 options with a middle-school question mark.
